First place I heard Einsturzende Neubauten, Thrill Kill Kult, or the awesome 12" remix of Ra Ra Rasputin by I Start Counting. and the gaps filled in with things like a clip about backward masking in a commercial recording session. Such times, such times. You were the Jean Shepherd of Portland.

Re: About Luke Lefler

To The Baron,

I really enjoyed listening to your show, The Broken hours. Your pre-recorded summers were something that i wish i had more of on cassette. I was maybe 14 or 15 and stumbled across your show late one night. That this was just the most outrageous thing. The remix of stuff you played swapped in with all notions of audio clips were very funny.

I remember as teen listening with my jaw dropped and pillow propped up under my head thinking this was some great kinda pirate radio ;-). Some things i still recall to this day.

There was a lady who used "Radio as her Bomb". I'm guessing for social activism.
For many weeks you declared " Radio was my Comb" with never explaining just what the heck that was. So i got up the gumption to personally write you a letter. In it you explained her position, but that you used Radio for personal grooming!
LMAO.. GREAT STUFF!
Thats when i got more involved and actually called in and had this idea to try Dungeons and Dragons over the radio. O_o.
Looking back, you never shot me down or said " hey bad idea". You in fact kinda encouraged it. Admittedly i never got the details to work, but...

Just want to say thanks for your show. Good Times!!

-michael

Re: Three Friends Mondays: Caffeinated Art #30

It is installed on the wall so you can use your window as normal and if you're not using it, simply roll it up in its aluminium blind date uncensored casing. We used to kick it a bit back in the day. I found you because I was doing a search for Portland Poets and landed in your blog. I am a painter now. I have had several art shows at 3 Friends Coffee shop, which is a block from my art studio. You say in your profile that you design websites -What do you charge?

Re: The Ross Island Bridge CD Release Show and Local Songwriter Revue

My second favorite bridge in Portland is the Golden Gate.

Words cannot describe the feelings going through me right now. It has been some time since I last saw or spoke with Derik, ( I think we had a HH reunion in the early 90's), and was looking him up for a 25 year get together from our best house. I hope to still make that happen, and we will certainly toast the most creative man I have ever met. Thanks Derik for teaching me what you did then. Kevin and I still laugh at some of the crazy things that went on behind the scenes.

God speed my friend.

I knew Derik well, during high school, as we were both members of the 'I-Hi Times' school newspaper staff. We thus spend many, many, hours together, during the 1977-1978 school year. Derik's friendship is one of my most fond memories of high school; his talent, humor, and wit, continues to touch me all these years later. Derik is the one of the best (in so many ways), and certainly most talented, people I've known.
Luke doesn't know me, but through Derik, I know him somewhat well. Derik spoke of Luke often; of his friendship, and Luke's talent. Derik admired Luke for the same attributes that I admired Derik--his deft sensibilities, his talent, and love of life.
Though I haven't spoken to Derik in many years, that doesn't diminish the sense of loss that I feel, knowing that he has moved on. I'm richer for having known Derik, and being his friend.
Thank-you for your kind words about Derik. Our family is still in disbelief and shock and grieving terribly and this Christmas will be very sad without him. We miss him so much. We enjoyed seeing his cartoons again. I remember when he was drawing these.
I'm glad he had friends like you that have fond memories of him. He was such a good son.
